Frederick Reece

Visiting Assistant Professor of Music (Music Theory)

Biography

Frederick Reece is a postdoctoral resident scholar and visiting assistant professor of music in music theory at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Reece previously taught at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, after completing his Ph.D. at Harvard University with the support of an Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Fellowship. His current research examines the works of canonical western composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert as emulated by musical forgers, from the eighteenth century to the present day. He is completing a book addressing this topic, The Craft of Forgery in Musical Composition.

Other areas of interest include the history of music theory, intellectual property law, and automated non-human composition. His most recent research article, “Composing Authority in Six Forged ‘Haydn’ Sonatas,” appeared in the Journal of Musicology last year.
