Leonard Slatkin to join faculty at IU Jacobs School of Music

Following a number of guest appearances at the Indiana University Summer Music Festival, internationally recognized American conductor Leonard Slatkin has decided to make the IU Jacobs School of Music his academic home, it was announced today (Oct. 27). Slatkin, music director of the National Symphony Orchestra and five-time Grammy Award-winner, will be named the Arthur R. Metz Foundation Conductor at the Jacobs School.   Full Story

Orion Quartet named resident ensemble at IU Jacobs School of Music

Jaime Laredo Receives Vermont's Highest Arts Award

Vermont Governor James H. Douglas and the Vermont Arts Council will present the 2006 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts to Vermont Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Jacobs School Professor Jaime Laredo in a public ceremony at the State House in Montpelier beginning at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 19, 2006.   Full Story

Katrina benefit concert planned at IU Jacobs School of Music

A benefit concert in support of the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Habitat for Humanity Musicians Village will be performed on Sunday, October 15, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. in Auer Hall at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Faculty participants include violinist Federico Agostini, violist Atar Arad, cellist Emilio Colon, violist Yuval Gotlibovich, pianist Jean-Louis Haguenauer, violinist Mark Kaplan, violinist Alexander Kerr, violinist Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, and pianist Yael Weiss. International prize-winning student violinist Frederieke Saeijs will also perform. Works to be performed are by Brahms, Prokofiev, and Schumann.   Full Story

Indiana University Ballet Theater begins new era with Fall Ballet

Indiana University Ballet Theater begins a new era Oct. 6 and 7 as it opens its 2006-07 season with the Fall Ballet "From Balanchine to Baker: An International Evening of Dance" at the Musical Arts Center. The program will mark Michael Vernon's official debut as the newly appointed chair of the IU Jacobs School of Music's Ballet Department, while his ballet Cathedral also makes its Bloomington debut the same weekend.   Full Story

Distinguished Professor David N. Baker, chair of the Jazz Studies Department, received the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award for 2006 on Thursday, September 7. The annual award recognizes an IU faculty member who has achieved international recognition for work as a performer, composer, scholar, and educator. With an extraordinary career as composer, jazz pedagogue, performer, and national arts leader, Baker continues to inspire students, faculty colleagues, and alumni, as well as musicians and arts leaders around the world.   Full Story

A new composition by Indiana University Distinguished Professor of Music David Baker will incorporate audience members' cell phones in order to create a shared participatory performance experience. Baker's Concertino for Cellular Phones and Orchestra is scheduled to kick off the 20th anniversary season of the Chicago Sinfonietta on Oct. 1 and 2 under the direction of Maestro Paul Freeman.   Full Story
