Upcoming Singing Hoosiers concert to feature music of Cole Porter and friends

The Singing Hoosiers, one of America's most popular show choirs and often considered Indiana University's ambassadors of song, will pay tribute to one of Indiana's most iconic jazz composers, Cole Porter (1891-1964), in a free concert. "Cole Porter and Friends" is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. in Auer Hall at the IU Jacobs School of Music. A repeat performance is scheduled for the following night, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. in the same location.

Robert Porco, adjunct professor of choral conducting and senior advisor to the Choral Department chair at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, is the recipient of the Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art from Chorus America.
Joshua Bell, Menahem Pressler among artists to perform at Jacobs School's 'Summer Music' series

As part of the inaugural Indiana University Summer Festival of the Arts, the Jacobs School of Music has assembled a "Summer Music" series of more than 40 free and ticketed events from June 20 through Aug. 10. In all, the series offers an array of world-class concerts featuring orchestra, chamber music, piano, band, percussion, opera, chorus and other special events. Highlights this year include violin virtuoso and Jacobs faculty member Joshua Bell, legendary pianist Distinguished Professor Menahem Pressler and eclectic string trio Time for Three.
IU Jacobs School of Music Singing Hoosiers to tour China

Known as "the ambassadors of song for Indiana University," the Singing Hoosiers will embark on a 13-day performance tour of China beginning May 9. A group of 40 members of the 90-voice ensemble from the IU Jacobs School of Music plan to participate in this experience along with music director Professor Michael Schwartzkopf.
Singing Hoosiers to present Spring Concert at IU Auditorium

The Singing Hoosiers, otherwise known as Indiana University's "ambassadors of song," will perform a concert of American popular songs at IU Auditorium Saturday, April 2, at 8 p.m. Led by Jacobs School of Music professor Michael Schwartzkopf, the ensemble will perform an entertaining program of Broadway favorites, jazz selections and other American popular songs, all with dazzling choreography, energy and style. "It's always thrilling to be back in the IU Auditorium for our spring concert," Schwartzkopf said. "After traveling far and wide during the year, it's our opportunity to celebrate this great music with Bloomington audiences and the many choir alumni who visit for the event."
IU Jacobs School of Music presents Handel's 'Judas Maccabaeus' in Indianapolis and Bloomington

A formidable force of 60 musicians and singers from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is set to present George Frideric Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabaeus, HWV 63. The ensemble will perform the work three times: on Friday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Indianapolis and on Saturday, March 5, at 8 p.m., and Sunday March 6, at 4 p.m., in Bloomington's Auer Hall.
IU Singing Hoosiers and Purdue Varsity Glee Club join in Indianapolis performance

For the first time since 1997, two rivals -- the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and the IU Singing Hoosiers -- will become one voice. "This will be an event that no one will want to miss," said Michael Schwartzkopf, professor of music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and music director of the Singing Hoosiers. "We may be rivals on the fields and on the courts, but music will bring us together in exciting harmony."

The Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Carmen Helena Télez, will present a program of works by Jewish composers on Jewish topics this Sunday, Dec. 5, in Chicago. The free concert will take place at the historic synagogue KAM Isaiah Israel in Hyde Park at 3 p.m.

Indiana University Auditorium will present the annual holiday tradition Chimes of Christmas on Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Seasonal tunes such as "A Christmas Gala," "Christmas on Broadway" and "Jingle Bells" will be performed by the IU Jacobs School of Music Wind Ensemble, conducted by Stephen W. Pratt; the Trombone Choir, conducted by Carl Lenthe; and the Grammy Award-nominated Singing Hoosiers, the country's premier collegiate show choir, conducted by Michael Schwartzkopf.
IU Professors Téllez, Pryor and de Souza to be honored

Carmen Helena Téllez, professor in the Jacobs School of Music and the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Tracy M. Sonneborn Award at Indiana University, will be recognized on Nov. 4 in the IU Simon Music Center's Auer Hall. Also recognized will be Sara C. Pryor, professor in the Department of Geography, and Romualdo de Souza, professor in the Department of Chemistry, both of whom have been named Provost Professors.

IU's Singing Hoosiers will pay tribute to one of the nation's most popular composers in Hoagy Carmichael and Friends, a free concert, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., and repeated at 8:30 p.m., in Auer Hall at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The program will be recorded as part of a preservation project. Then, on Oct. 5, a small ensemble within the Singing Hoosiers will travel to Washington, D.C., to celebrate and recognize former U.S. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton's dedication and work with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a post from which he is now retiring.

The IU Singing Hoosiers, directed for 15 years by Jacobs Professor Michael Schwartzkopf, will take the audience on a musical journey through the life of one of Bloomington's favorite sons in Hoagy Carmichael and Friends. The concerts take place on a weekend during which the program will be recorded as part of a preservation project.

IU Jacobs School of Music hosts renowned Brazilian and Chinese ensembles

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will welcome two world-renowned international ensembles this semester--the São Paulo State University Percussion Ensemble, Grupo PIAP, from Brazil and the Peiyang Chorus of Tianjin University in China. The Percussion Ensemble will present a concert Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. in Auer Hall. Peiyang Chorus will present a concert March 10 at 7 p.m. in Auer Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
