Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater at the Jacobs School of Music has announced its spring 2012 live streaming schedule. The streaming project provides an opportunity for anyone with a broadband Internet connection anywhere in the world to watch high-definition video of performances taking place on the Musical Arts Center stage.

IU Jacobs School of Music Distinguished Professor Violette Verdy to receive New York City Ballet award

Violette Verdy, distinguished professor of ballet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, will receive the 2011 Jerome Robbins Award on stage at an all-Robbins New York City Ballet evening at the David Koch Theater Sept. 30. She will join 25 other former and current company ballerinas, all of whom worked with choreographer Robbins.

Just weeks after its spring ballet production in the Musical Arts Center, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Department of Ballet presents its annual "Ballet at the BCT: The Choreography Project" April 19-20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington. The performances are free and open to the public.

Taking traditional ballet to the edge of expression and back again, Indiana Univeristy Ballet Theater offers three major choreographies by three leading 20th-century New York choreographers in its upcoming spring ballet program New York, New York!. Two 8 p.m. performances will take place in the Musical Arts Center March 25-26. A 2 p.m. matinee performance is scheduled for March 26.

IU Ballet Theater presents annual performance of 'The Nutcracker'

IU Ballet Theater will present its 52nd annual production of The Nutcracker at the Musical Arts Center, Dec. 3-4 at 8 p.m., and Dec. 4-5 at 2 p.m. The popular production will feature choreography created specifically for the Jacobs School of Music's dancers by Michael Vernon, chair of the Jacobs School Ballet Department. "The level of dancing continues to improve," Vernon said. "There is always something new to see in the ballet because the dancers change every year. The freshmen, who constitute the corps de ballet in the waltz, are, in my opinion, one of the best freshmen classes ever. The audience will really enjoy that dance."
IU Auditorium presents Broadway award-winner 'A Chorus Line,' featuring several IU alums

The classic Broadway musical A Chorus Line comes to IU Auditorium for two nights, Nov. 16-17, at 8 p.m. Seventeen Broadway hopefuls seek parts in the chorus of an upcoming Broadway production. All have made the first cut, but the second part of the audition is something none of the performers expects: the director asks each hopeful to come forward and talk about who they are inside. Throughout the show, the audience learns the story of each dancer's struggles, triumphs and everything in between. In the end, only eight make it to the chorus, but the story of how they got there will be remembered.
IU Jacobs School of Music announces endowed chair in ballet

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music has received the gift of an endowment to support the first faculty chair position in its ballet department, Dean Gwyn Richards announced today. The inaugural recipient of the Kathy Ziliak Anderson Chair in Ballet is Distinguished Professor Violette Verdy.

This season, falling leaves bring graceful leaps to the Indiana University Musical Arts Center stage with a world premiere of new choreography from New York choreographer Joshua Bergasse. The 2010 IU Ballet Theater Season commences with "A Choreographer's Evening" on Oct. 8 and 9 at 8 p.m., featuring four separate dances that blend modern, classical and original styles that highlight a broad range of choreography in dance.

Just weeks after its successful presentation of "An American Evening" Spring Ballet, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Department of Ballet presents its annual "Ballet at the BCT: The Choreography Project" at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington. "Ballet at the BCT" takes place April 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. As with many Jacobs School of Music events, the performances are free and open to the public.

Distinguished Professor Violette Verdy and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, former chair of the IU Jacobs School of Music Ballet Department -- both former principal dancers with New York City Ballet -- will teach and coach their roles in Liebeslieder Walzer for The George Balanchine Foundation's Video Archives. Taping over a two-day period will commence March 28 in New York City Ballet studios.

Indiana University Ballet Theater will conclude its 2009-2010 season in patriotic style in the Musical Arts Center with An American Evening March 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. A newly introduced matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 27. The spring production will feature ballets that have been inspired by America and its dancers through works of the legendary George Balanchine ("Serenade" and "Rubies") and choreographic pioneer Agnes de Mille ("Rodeo").

Around the world, ballet companies from the Kirov to the Royal Ballet are planning performances that will honor the 100th anniversary of the first performance by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes. Joining the celebration, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music's Ballet Theater will present its fall ballet program, Diaghilev Tribute. The evening features the work of two choreographers from the Diaghilev era, George Balanchine and Bronislava Nijinska, and new choreography from Michael Vernon, chair of the Jacobs School Department of Ballet.
