IU Jacobs School of Music students win prestigious fellowships

Two doctoral students from the Musicology Department in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music have won prestigious fellowships to pursue dissertation research in Europe. Lisa Cooper Vest was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to Poland. The topic of her dissertation is "Musical and Political Negotiations in Polish Music Life, 1956-1970." Jonathan Yaeger was awarded a Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) Research Grant from the German Academic Exchange Service. His dissertation is titled "The Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig in East Germany, 1949-1990."   Full Story

Hans Tischler Day proclaimed honoring musicologist's life work

Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan has designated January 18, 2008, as Hans Tischler Day, in honor of the internationally renowned musicologist and Jacobs School of Music professor emeritus. In celebration, today Dean Gwyn Richards read the following proclamation at Mr. Tischler's Musicology Colloquium Series lecture presentation.   Full Story

Musicology goes "Hip" at IU

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Musicology Department's newest recruit, Assistant Professor Phil Ford comfortably merging cultural studies with traditional musicology. "We are very excited that Phil Ford is joining the department," says Musicology Department Chair Massimo Ossi. "He will bring to the Jacobs School a wide range of interests in American music of the second half of the twentieth century, including jazz, musical theater, and radical and countercultural intellectual movements."   Full Story

IU musicologist rewrites ‘History’

Through six editions and nearly half a century, A History of Western Music has defined the way music history has been taught. But it's the seventh edition of the book, which was revised and rewritten by Indiana University musicologist Peter Burkholder, that promises to significantly impact the way students listen to, learn and understand Western music.   Full Story
