IU Jacobs School's Summer Music series features array of world-class concerts

As part of Indiana University's third annual Summer Festival of the Arts, the Jacobs School of Music will present Summer Music, an offering of more than 50 free and ticketed events from June 14 through July 23. Highlights this year include the triennial USA International Harp Competition.

One of the leading international harp competitions in the world begins July 10 at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The ninth annual USA International Harp Competition is expected to draw more than 50 harpists to Bloomington, the largest number of contestants since its inception. All events are free and open to the public.
Jacobs School appoints Espen Jensen director of admissions and financial aid

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce that Norwegian-born Espen Jensen is its new director of admissions and financial aid. He began his activities as director March 18, 2013.

Jacobs School students excel in local NSAL competition

Indiana University Jacobs School of Music students received numerous awards in the Bloomington Chapter of the 2012 National Society of Arts and Letters voice, instrumental and ballet competitions recently held at the Jacobs School of Music. The top two winners in each category will perform at the NSAL 46th Annual Showcase of the Arts on Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m. in the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.
Traditional Venezuelan harpist to perform, offer master class at IU

On a tour across the United States, virtuoso Venezuelan harpist Angel Tolosa and his ensemble, Ensamble A Contratiempo, will perform a free concert at the Jacobs School of Music Nov. 5 at 8:30 p.m. in Recital Hall on the IU Bloomington campus. The concert will follow a master class by the ensemble in the same location from 5 p.m to 7 p.m.

Four of the six recipients of the 2011 Indiana Governor's Arts Awards are affiliated with Indiana University. The recipients of the awards were revealed Aug. 25 by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Arts Commission. This year's recipients include Distinguished Professor of Harp Susann McDonald and Sylvia McNair, both faculty members of the Jacobs School of Music at IU Bloomington; Alexander Toradze, a Distinguished Professor and Martin Professor of Piano at IU South Bend; and June Edwards, vice president of the Arts Foundation Board at IU South Bend.

IU Jacobs School of Music announces winners of Concerto Competition

The Jacobs School of Music has announced the recent student winners of concerto competitions in areas of violin, cello, brass and harp. The instrumentalists will perform with the Philharmonic, Symphony and University Orchestras as well as with the Wind Ensemble. A concerto will be included in IU Ballet Theater's spring ballet. All of the concerts are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated. The first concert features harpist Emily Levin March 2 at 8 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center.
2010 USA International Harp Competition winner announced

Agnès Clément of Lyon, France, won the gold medal in the 2010 USA International Harp Competition which culminated July 17 at the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington.

The 8th triennial USA International Harp Competition begins July 7 at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Ind. The competition was preceded this year by Harp Dreams, a nationally released PBS documentary produced by WTIU about the 2007 competition by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Susanne Schwibs, a lecturer in the IU Department of Communication and Culture. The film is narrated by actress Blythe Danner and features an original score by Jacobs School of Music alumnus Cary Boyce.

Virtuosic harp music will once again ring through recital halls on the Indiana University Bloomington campus, as the 7th USA International Harp Competition takes place from July 4-14. Founded in 1989 by renowned harpist and IU Jacobs School of Music Distinguished Professor of Music Susann McDonald, the USA International Harp Competition is one of the largest and most prestigious events of its kind in the world. The public is invited to attend all competition stages and competition events, which are free and open to the public.
