The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Brass Department will present "Octubafest 2012" beginning Thursday, Oct. 18, and running through Tuesday, Oct. 23. The annual series of performances on the tuba and the euphonium by students, faculty and guests is free and open to the public.

The late tuba virtuoso Harvey Phillips tells the story of his amazing life and career with warmth and humor in "Mr. Tuba," published this week by Indiana University Press. Phillips was Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the IU Jacobs School of Music at the time of his death in 2010.

Sonneborn recipient, Provost Professors

Richard B. Miller, a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at IU Bloomington, will receive the 2012 Tracy M. Sonneborn Award. Miller also has been named a Provost Professor along with Jerome Busemeyer in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Daniel Perantoni in the Jacobs School of Music.

Jacobs School of Music student, Andy Smith, wins principal position in Lyric Opera Orchestra

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--Following an extensive multi-week audition and interview process involving hundreds of musicians, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music student, Andy Smith, has won the principal tuba position in the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra. Smith will begin his performances with the Lyric Opera during their 2012/13 season.

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will host a "Festival of Friends" musical celebration honoring the life and career of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Harvey Phillips in the Musical Arts Center (MAC) at IU Bloomington on Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. The free event, which will take place almost a year after Phillips' passing, will include performances from faculty, distinguished alumni and students from the Jacobs School.

Peder MacLellan, doctoral student and associate instructor of tuba and euphonium at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, recently won the principal tuba position with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra beginning in the 2011-12 season.

IU Jacobs School of Music announces winners of Concerto Competition

The Jacobs School of Music has announced the recent student winners of concerto competitions in areas of violin, cello, brass and harp. The instrumentalists will perform with the Philharmonic, Symphony and University Orchestras as well as with the Wind Ensemble. A concerto will be included in IU Ballet Theater's spring ballet. All of the concerts are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated. The first concert features harpist Emily Levin March 2 at 8 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center.

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Brass Department presents the annual Octubafest, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 27 and running through Oct. 31, with an Octobaween concert in Ford-Crawford Hall at 7 p.m. The series of concerts by Jacobs School of Music students offers a wide variety of performances on the tuba and the euphonium and will be dedicated to the memory of tuba pioneer, Distinguished Professor Emeritus Harvey Phillips, who passed away last week.

He has become the first brass player chosen for induction into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
