Jacobs School of Music student, Andy Smith, wins principal position in Lyric Opera Orchestra

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--Following an extensive multi-week audition and interview process involving hundreds of musicians, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music student Andy Smith has won the principal tuba position in the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra. Smith will begin his performances with the Lyric Opera during their 2012/13 season.
Smith, from Amarillo, Texas, received his Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Tech University, where he studied with Kevin Waas. He is currently in his first year of the Master of Music program at the Jacobs School, studying with Dan Perantoni. Prior to winning the Lyric Opera position, Smith was a highly sought after tubist in Texas, where he performed regularly with the Amarillo, Lubbock, and Big Spring Symphonies. Smith was recently the winner of the 2010 International Tuba and Euphonium Association's Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestra Audition.
