Yugoslavian costume designer to visit IU

Milanka Berberovic, an internationally-known costume designer, will be in Bloomington for the next two weeks for workshops with Indiana University theatre and opera design students.

The award-winning Yugoslavian costume designer also will display renderings, sketches and costumes with Yugoslavian colleagues Ljiljana Petrovic and Ivana Veljovic in the Theatre Art Gallery at IU's new Theatre and Drama Center. Berberovic's visit is sponsored by the IU Department of Theatre and Drama.

The works in the gallery show will consist of six costumes and a costume rendering on a four-meter-long piece of fabric. The exhibit will be open during evening performances of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing on Feb. 1, 2 and Feb. 4-9 in the Wells-Metz Theatre at the new Theatre and Drama complex.

In addition to the gallery exhibit, Berberovic will conduct student workshops. She plans to work with students on designs for the opera Secret Marriage and provide instruction in realistic and stylized rendering techniques.

Berberovic has won numerous awards for design in Yugoslavia's National Theatre, Opera and Ballet. Her work has been included in several international expositions, and she is the recipient in world competition of the Prague Quadrennial gold award for costume design.
