BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Cléa Galhano as adjunct lecturer in music (early music/recorder).

A native of Brazil, Galhano is an internationally renowned performer of early, contemporary and Brazilian music. She is also executive artistic director of the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music and a faculty member at Macalester College.

“Cléa Galhano is well recognized as a world-class performer and teacher on the recorder, in the U.S. and abroad,” said Dana Marsh, director of the Jacobs School of Music Historical Performance Institute. “Her indefatigable energy has nourished generations of students with inspiration in the historical performance movement. We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome her, and we see a very bright future for recorder studies in the HPI at IU.”

“I am honored to be invited to join the wonderful Jacobs School Historical Performance Institute and excellent faculty,” said Galhano. “Recorder has been my life-long passion and I am sure that, with the support of this vibrant musical environment, I can provide students with the tools to develop excellent skills, creative thinking, curiosity and scholarship. I welcome recorder students from around the country and the world.”

Galhano has performed in the United States, Canada, South America and Europe as a chamber musician, collaborating with fellow recorder player Marion Verbruggen as well as Jacques Ogg, Belladonna, the Lanzelotte/Galhano Duo and the Kingsbury Ensemble. She has worked as a featured soloist with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, New World Symphony, Musical Offering, Milwaukee Baroque and Lyra Baroque Orchestra.

An advocate of recorder music and educational initiatives, Galhano served six years on the National Board of the American Recorder Society and is music director of the Recorder Orchestra of the Midwest. She recently received the prestigious 2013 McKnight Fellowship Award.

“I hope I will be able to inspire and empower recorder players to pursue their music careers and dreams, as well as advocate for historical performance in Bloomington’s musical community,” said Galhano.
