IU Jacobs School of Music welcomes electronic and computer music specialist Chi Wang to composition faculty

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 12, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Chi (Iris) Wang as assistant professor of music in composition: electronic and computer music, effective Aug. 1, 2019.

Wang is currently an instructor at the University of Oregon, where she earned a D.M.A. in the performance of data-driven instruments. This emerging field combines composition, sound design and performance of electronic music using repurposed game controllers and unusual custom-built instruments.

“Chi Wang’s engineering background, compositional ability, sense of interdisciplinarity and embrace of diverse art forms and modes of inquiry combine to make a unique and forward-thinking artist and teacher,” said Gwyn Richards, David Henry Jacobs Bicentennial Dean. “We are all excited to see where her creative impulses lead our school, and impact the thinking of our students.”

Wang has performed her compositions at high-profile electronic music gatherings such as the International Computer Music Conference, where she won the Best Piece (Americas) award in 2018; national conferences of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States, where her composition “Peony Garden” was voted by the membership to appear on the 2018 conference CD; New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival; Musicacoustica-Beijing; Kyma International Sound Symposium and many others. She is also a translator into Chinese of many important texts on electroacoustic music.

Wang will be featured in the Jacobs Center for Electronic and Computer Music’s Computer Music Recital, directed by faculty Jeffrey Hass and John Gibson, on Sunday, April 14, at 8 p.m. in Auer Hall. Watch video of her performing “Peony Garden” and “Qin.”

“Iris Wang brings to us a fresh emphasis on the composition and performance of electronic music using innovative instrument designs, complementing our traditional strengths in music for acoustic instruments and electronics, as well as fixed audio and visual media,” said John Gibson, incoming director of the Center for Electronic and Computer Music. “Her extensive knowledge of this exciting new performance practice, her stunning sound design and her open, encouraging approach to teaching will inspire IU students to do their best work.”

“I am extremely honored to join the magnificent faculty at the Jacobs School of Music,” said Wang. “Being granted the opportunity to work with the incredibly talented students, to conduct creative research in music composition and performance in such an inspirational environment and to contribute as a full member of the IU community is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!”
