Background:
James Campbell studied with Abe Galper, Yona Ettlinger, Mitchel Lurie and Daniel Bonade. His former students have played in orchestras including Amsterdam's Concertgebow Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony, and several US military bands, and they hold teaching positions at universities and conservatories worldwide. He has given master classes on five continents including the Royal Academy in London, the Tokyo College of Music, the Moscow Conservatory, the Rotterdam Conservatory, the University of Southern California, the Beijing Conservatory, and throughout Australia and Canada. His concerts have taken him to over 25 countries, appearing as soloist with over 50 orchestras including the Montreal Symphony, the Russian Philharmonic, the London Symphony, and the Boston Pops. He has performed with Glenn Gould, Aaron Copland, over 30 different string quartets, and jazz with pianist Gene DiNovi. He has over 40 recordings encompassing most of the standard clarinet repertoire. His recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet was chosen by BBC Radio and the London Times as the best available.
