Ayana Smith

Ayana Smith's research interests are in eighteenth-century Italian opera, nineteenth-century art song, and music and literature. She is a former lecturer and instructor at Yale University and Southern Connecticut State University. Among the courses that she taught were Baroque music, nineteenth-century art song, and African-American music.
Professor Smith received a dissertation fellowship in 1999 and a pre-dissertation research grant in 1998, both from Yale University. She also received the Peter Fram Swing Prize in Music from Swarthmore College in 1995. Her dissertation was entitled "Opera in Arcadia: Rome, Florence, and Venice in the Primo Settecento."
She has presented papers at the Mellon Fellows Conference at Rice University in 2000 and the Yale Dissertation Colloquium in 1999.
