Background:
Katherine Strand teaches general methods, an introduction to learning and teaching, and graduate-level elementary methods at IU. She has a Ph.D. in music education from Northwestern University (2003), a M.M. in choral conducting from Virginia Commonwealth University (1987), and a B.A. with a music major from Allegheny College (1981). She has taught pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public school in several venues, including West Point and Hanover counties in Virginia and the Chicago public schools, along with serving as vocal coach and music director for the School for the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community. Dr. Strand has served as vocal faculty and integrated arts teacher at the Virginia Governor's School for the Humanities and the Visual and Performing Arts since 1999. She is the current director of the Descant choir for the Indiana University Children's Chorus and serves as the advisor for the Indiana University Collegiate Chapter of the Music Educators National Conference.
Dr. Strand specializes in learning and transfer, integrated curriculum development, teacher research and classroom composition. In the past year, Dr. Strand presented a session on "undergraduate teacher research" at the Biennial Music Educator's National Conference in Minneapolis, MN, and on cognitive apprenticeship in music teaching at the National College Music Society Conference in San Francisco, CA. Her articles have appeared in the Music Educators Journal, the Musicator, the Philosophy of Music Education Review and the Proceedings from the 6th International Conference on Music Cognition and Perception.
