The IU Jacobs School of Music's Percussion Ensemble, directed by Jacobs School faculty John Tafoya and Kevin Bobo, has won the Percussive Arts Society's International Percussion Competition. The ensemble will perform at the society's international convention in Indianapolis, November 15, 2013.
The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce that jazz trombonist Wayne Wallace will join its faculty as professor of practice in jazz this fall. A five-time Grammy nominee, Wallace is one of the most respected exponents of African American-Latin music in the world today.
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie presented the University Medal to IU President Emeritus Thomas Ehrlich at the June 7 rededication of the renovated Alumni Hall. The ceremony also served as the formal naming of the organ recently installed in the historic hall in the Indiana Memorial Union, now known as the Webb-Ehrlich Great Organ of Alumni Hall. Ehrlich shares the naming honor with Charles H. Webb, dean emeritus of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
The Indiana University Women's Philanthropy Council will award grants totaling $124,730 to 12 schools or organizations affiliated with four IU campuses. The awards range from $4,000 to $20,000 and will support projects that foster community outreach, career development, public health, student philanthropy, education and diversity at IU Bloomington, IUPUC, IUPUI and IU Southeast.
Members of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music String Academy, directed by Jacobs professor Mimi Zweig, will leave this Sunday, June 2, for a performance tour of Argentina and Brazil, returning June 19.
Led by Indiana University Jacobs School of Music faculty member Kimberly Carballo and Mpingo Studios Director Diana Smith Nixon, five Bloomington musicians will join their counterparts in Nairobi, Kenya, this month for a three-week teaching and performance workshop at schools in the area.
The third annual Summer Festival of the Arts, which is quickly becoming one of Indiana University's most anticipated summer traditions, begins today. The festival began in 2011 as a way to support the creation of new arts events. It also showcases the many cultural offerings that help make the community such a vibrant arts destination for townies and tourists, as well as those attending the various camps, conferences and workshops held over the summer on the Bloomington campus.
Four students and an alumna from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music travel to Italy this month for the second annual four-week summer research project on manuscripts from the 18th and 19th centuries at the Greggiati Library in the city of Ostiglia.
