Menahem Pressler Day


The Bloomington City Council and Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan have designated December 5, 2007, as Menahem Pressler Day, in honor of the internationally renowned pianist and Indiana University Distinguished Professor.

In celebration of the day, the council will read the following proclamation into the record of their meeting this evening at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live on the local Community Access Television Services (CATS), Channel 14.

WHEREAS, Menahem Pressler, for the past 52 years has devoted his life, with equal passion, to both performing music and teaching students in America and throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, a Distinguished Professor of Music at Indiana University, Mr. Pressler is also a founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio, and has been synonymous with the Trio since its inception; and

WHEREAS, in addition to performing as member of the Beaux Arts Trio, Mr. Pressler, is internationally active as a soloist, having performed concerts in many cities including Brussels, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Helsinki, London, New York, Oslo, Pittsburgh and San Francisco; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Pressler's many honors include a lifetime achievement award from Gramophone Magazine, the National Society of Arts and Letters Gold Medal of Merit, the German Critics' "Ehrenurkunde" Award and the Indiana Arts Commission Governor's Arts Award. He also was named a commander in France's Order of Arts and Letters and was awarded the Service Award by Chamber Music America; and

WHEREAS, despite a busy and demanding schedule, Menahem Pressler has found time to record more than 50 albums with the Beaux Arts Trio and more than 30 solo albums; and

WHEREAS, for nearly five decades, Menahem Pressler has transformed the lives of music lovers throughout the world, has shaped the musical lives of legions of talented young people, and has become international citizen of the musical world, while calling Bloomington home,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mark Kruzan, Mayor of Bloomington, Indiana, by virture of the authority vested in me, and I, Dave Rollo, President of the Bloomington City Council, by the power vested in me do hereby proclaim December 5, 2007 as

Menahem Pressler Day

in Bloomington, Indiana, and call on all citizens to join us in congratulating Menahem Pressler for his remarkable dedication and accomplishments as a musician and a teacher.

IN WITNESS THEREOF, we have hereunto set our hands and caused to be affixed the Seals of the City of Bloomington and of Monroe County this 3rd day of December 2007.
